Theory About The Future of UI

Nov 14, 2023

UI will serve as the "experience premium" of software.

As the mediums of interaction with technology become increasingly integrated within our environment or ourselves, the role of the interface will change.

With voice, touch, gestures, and sensors, the interface will not be necessary, but an option.

In this new paradigm, the interface is an additional layer of interaction that can be used to differentiate through experience.

Only interfaces with truly differentiated experiential design will offer a value proposition compelling enough to adopt them, and all others will be made obsolete (especially low quality, friction-full, uninteresting UI/UX..).

UI/UX will be treated as a premium good, and will provide pricing power to the ones that do it well.

How will those that do it well differentiate? Perhaps with style, immersion, feelings, brand, multi-sensory interactions...

Designers will be less "interface builders", and more "software artists".

This means: the fate of product interfaces will be polarising.

The best ones will rise, the bad ones will be buried (and the ones in the middle forgotten).
